It seem the more attention virtual reality(VR) gets, the more games that are made for VR platforms. Which when you think about it, it wouldn’t make sense anyways to release a new interface, without suitable content showcasing its capabilities. “Virtual reality is expected to generate $5.1 billion in sales in 2016 with an install base of 38.9 million consumers“. So it make sense that developers are showing off their skills in creating elegant games for VR entertainment. Which is why, I want to take a minute to recognize this great company.
AlienTrap was started by Lee Vermeulen and Forest Hale in the summer of 2002. Their first project, “Nexuiz“, was a intent to “create a high quality first person shooter that could be played freely across all platforms: PC, MAC, and Linux.” The game was later released in 2005, with other online developers contributing to the aesthetics of the game. To understand how successful the game was, it has been downloaded over 6 million times. That’s pretty astounding. The reason I bring this up, is to establish that AlienTrap is no mediocre company. AlienTrap’s team went on to create several other aesthetically pleasing games. This includes their greek mythology based game “Apotheon,” a physics destruction sandbox “Autocraft,” a platform shooter game “Cryptark,” and more.
Though they have a astounding portfolio, there is one game that shows of AlienTraps virtual reality skills for the VR market. ModBox is a creative game which won a award at the Vision Awards. “Modbox is a VR physics sandbox game for the HTC Vive.” Essentially it is a open world game, that allows you to build and customize your own games. Matter fact, it allows you to do anything that comes to mind. You can create a firing range, a golf course, or shoot out basketballs to knock out bowling pins. There is a menu you can access, that is in the shape of a cube with different options to choose from. The actual environment can be altered as well, fitting your mood and desire. It may honestly be the first hi-quality sandbox game geared towards virtual reality platforms and is worth the gameplay.
If not, it is still worth recognizing AlienTrap and Modbox, for taking a different direction for VR gameplay.
